Bow Making

Brian will be teaching a class on archery bows at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.  Beginning with a log + hand tools, Brian will cover the history of bow craft and archery, culminating in a student archery tournament at the end of the week

Final assembly of the Fin Armoire in our guest room for a little photo shoot before it goes to the (best ever) client. It has been bleached and oiled and has so many fun details that I can’t wait to share. Custom bronze pulls, Osage orange spring latches (to keep the doors closed) and huge graduated drawers make this one hell of a piece. Can’t wait to make some for our home. #brianandhannahbuildahouse #finarmoire
Rebuilt this Risso Cabinet I made years ago into a hutch. Painted pine with walnut details and handmade stacked leather pulls. Pleased with the way it came out :) 📷 by @handatextiles
My Manago table sitting pretty in @welcometocalliope this one I made out of Japanese keyaki, the top is a single board from the floor of a Tokonoma room. It has a badass original patch repair from the 18th century in the top. Go visit it and say hi to Rosie for me! 📷 @welcometocalliope
Collecting sap to make the syrup! Got an additional 20 sap buckets on the property and am aiming for 5 gallons of syrup this year, 1.5 gallons down so far 🍁 can’t wait to show you my evaporating rig! #maplesyrup #maple
I built two horn bows over the last month. They are both strongly reflexed and will be strung in the opposite direction to their current shape (for more stored energy.) The bow in the background has had both horn and sinew applied to its 5 part Osage core and is curing before it can be strung. The bow in the foreground has yet to receive horn and sinew and had very wide limbs. You can see the v splice joinery which connects the different parts. In the next photo you can see how the horn is clamped to the core via rope and tensioning tool which applies tremendous pressure to the mating surfaces. Wooden wedges help with the wide limbs.
Completed Fin Armoire on the bench awaiting finish. Just hand planed the case to a shimmering gloss. So pleased with this one
